Pick fresh strawberries with a nice mixture of large and small berries (for natural sweetness). Hull, wash, and slice berries placing them in a large airtight baggie for storage while still wet.
Take butter and whipped cream along in your cooler.
At the campfire slice the cake into thin, square slices and butter one side of each slice. Place slices of cake in pie maker with a healthy portion of berries in the middle. Cook over coals for about three minutes per side. Take "shortcake" out of pie maker, place on plate, top with whipped cream, and serve warm. For variety, try mixing some canned blueberry pie filling with the strawberries.

Brush pie iron with a little butter. Put two thin slices from a loaf of angel food cake. The kind from the grocery store seems to work a little better because it is not so soft. Use either of the following fillings:
canned pie filling...cherry is really good
Sliced bananas with a little bit of caramel ice cream topping and some chopped walnuts
Put into pie iron and toast over campfire till done, about 7-10 minutes.
Remove from iron and sprinkle with a little powdered sugar.
