Go for the Gold achievement in Fallout 76 (2024)

Update from BobWings: You must be level 20 to start the main quest line of the update at the overseers house.

There are two factions that you will have to choose between near the middle of the main questline of the Wastelanders update: The Foundation and Crater. You will work with both for the first half of the quests to get acquainted with each. The game will then make it very obvious when you’re about to make the irreversible decision of picking sides. Don’t worry, the group you don’t pick doesn’t become hostile, you are just locked out of their main quests specifically. Because this game shouldn't actually exist, you can’t make save backups, so you will need two characters to complete both this and All That Glitters.

In order to access Buried Treasure, you have to side with Crater. Once you choose them, you will have to complete a series of quests before reaching Buried Treasure, but it is ultimately the final quest (technically next to last, but the final quest is just some dialogue in the vault) of the Wastelanders questline as long as you side with Crater. I recommend doing this as well as the Friends in Low Places achievement on the same character as you will likely be just one rep level below Ally if you do just from main quest progression.

One last thing to note: before you pick between the two factions, you are given two objectives on a quest from the Overseer in to discuss Vault 79 with each group. You can ignore the one that you do not wish to ultimately side with if you just want to finish the questline as quickly as possible.

Every single mission up to Buried Treasure had some sort of bug. That mission with Ra-Ra (I hate that kid), I had to start over about three times. So many doors that opened and I could not go past an invisible barrier, or enemies that didn’t spawn. Very frustrating.

Does playing that quest with someone else give achievement to both players? Or is it solo only? My friend and I play so I'm thinking if we break off to one faction each, and play the finale, boom. Then he joins me, boom.

If I remember right, it only progresses the mission for the host. I don’t think you can get one in a friends game.

One comment: I would not do Friends in Low Places on this alt. Do it on your main with the Crater XP glitch so that you have ally for both on the same character. Allies have access to the best loot from the gold brokers at each camp. You don't want to have to flip back and forth between characters to do dailies and earn bullion with the different factions, and then have to find a way to swap plans from one account to another if that's your sort of thing.

If you’re leveling up to 20 with an alt to get this, may want to do some of the main quests, but it’ll be faster leveling-wise if you just server hop and join Daily Ops teams via the Social Menu (access from your map screen). Let high-level teammates just carry you while you sit there, and if you’re with them long enough to bond, and maybe bought the Charisma cards for extra team XP, you’re going to shoot up in levels and get some good rewards muchh faster than doing main missions.

In case people have issues like C3LLDW3LLER, there is a security keyboard in the room behind where Johnny, Gail, and Ra-ra wait for you, right above the monitor, this should force the mission to update to flip the breaker. Had this issue as well.

So this is glitched for me. After the first time you meet up with Johnny you do it again. He either is outside the room and just says he’s busy, or he’s inside the room with 4 torrents and the door is open but can’t get in. I can glitch in but he is still just busy. Not able to proceed.

Edit: After restarting and fast travel back to cave entrance a few times it finally proceeded.

I underestimated how much work this required. 1. The character must be at least level 20 2. We can't start directly the missions for the Crater, we have to do some missions for the Overseer, the same that we already did before choosing the other faction :/ 3. Some enemies are really strong: the robots that throw lasers and the robots with 3 legs that throw missiles. I died many times

So I boosted my second character to level 50 by joining public events, then I used xCloud and another dummy account to transfer some good weapons and health packs from my main character (xCloud on PC) to the dummy account (another gamertag on my Xbox), then from the dummy account to my second character (xCloud on PC). Then with a good chainsaw, robots were way easier to kill.

I finally got this to not glitch after many many attempts. After looking online for solutions that didn't help I did something differently than all my previous attempts. I'll go step-by-step in case this helps anyone else who runs into this plague of a bug.

1. First enter the code and cave as normal and meet the group, then have Lou blow the door
2. When the door falls, take out the two turrets and weaken or kill the 2 eyebots, but DO NOT enter yet.
3. Talk to Meg, I listened to about 3 lines before just skipping the rest. Didn't ask about Ra-Ra or Lou or Meg herself, just said I'm good to go.
4. Meet up with the group at the locked door and let them finish the chat completely.
5. Photomode glitch into the next room and kill all 4 turrets and both the sentry and gusty. I died many times here. I left both eyebots alive, let them kill me to respawn back at the entrance and regroup at the door
6. Interact with the terminal as normal, then grab the keycard
7. Enter the side room to open the breaker hatch and flip the switch
8. IMMEDIATELY RUN TO THE ELEVATOR AND EXIT TO APPALACHIA
9. Re-enter the vault and pray that all 3 are in that small room, the door is actually there and closed rather than just open with an invisible barrier
10. If all went well, Johnny should start to interact with the console in front of him and the objective turns to use the intercom. The entire time one of the turrets in that small room with your 3 allies will be firing SFX non-stop, and could still be heard further down the tunnels.

I just hope this helps whomever tries this mission. Bugthesda really earns their name with this main quest, years-old mission-breaking bug.
